A NEW ERA OF TRANSPARENCY ON HEALTH & SAFETY AS WAREHOUSE WORKER PROTECTION ACT GOES INTO EFFECT

(NEW YORK, NY) –  Today, the New York Warehouse Worker Protection Act goes into effect. Originally sponsored by Senator  Jessica Ramos and Assemblymember Latoya Joyner, the law pulls the curtains on working conditions in warehouses by allowing workers to know their expected work quotas as well as their actual work speeds.

“In an industry where the pressures of packing and shipping products creates conditions where workers delay the use of the restroom, work on their feet without rest for long hours, where repetitive motion creates long-term injuries to joints, it’s critical that employers be transparent about how they are organizing the work and address hazardous conditions caused by high quota demands leading to increased  injuries.

“By signing this law, Governor Hochul took a major step toward protecting warehouse workers across New York State. Now, this legislation will help ensure that workers are better informed about safety conditions in their workplaces.  We look forward to a continued partnership with Governor Hochul and the Legislature on more solutions to keep workers safe,” said Stuart Appelbaum, president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union.
