Local 110 Supports Striking Cargill Workers
RWDSU Local 110 members who work at the General Mills and Quaker Oats plants in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, came out in October to support striking workers at the neighboring Cargill corn milling plant. Workers at the plant – members of Teamsters Local 238 – have been on strike since October 1.
Nearly 100 workers are striking due to unacceptable wage proposals from the company, which lag far behind industry standards and inflation.
“Cargill is making a ton of profits, and they are trying to shortchange their workers,” said Local 110 President Shane Forbes. “We are behind them every step of the way, we’ve got each other’s backs, and we’ll keep raising our voices to support them until Cargill returns to the table and negotiates a fair contract.”
Over 200 union members from across Iowa came to the rally, which was coordinated by the Hawkey Labor Council along with the Teamsters.
